Campaign Web Sites Build Connections

Candidate Web sites provided connections to the electoral Web sphere by linking to sites produced by other political actors. These outlinks enabled citizens and other users to navigate within the 2002 electoral Web sphere.

Producing an electoral Web sphere

Through connections established by outlinks, candidate web sites participated in the production of an electoral Web sphere. The 2002 Campaign Web Sphere Analysis project looked at number of types of political actors to which candidate Web sites linked. Types of political actors examined in this analysis were political parties, press organizations, government agencies and civic and advocacy groups.
Creating connections
85% of campaign sites participated in the creation of a 2002 electoral Web sphere by linking to at least one type of site produced by another political actor.
 Expanding connections
25% of the candidate sites provided outlinks to an expanded set of political actors by linking to two or more different types.

Connection Report              Connection Webscape

The Campaign Web Sphere Analysis is based on an assessment of candidate web sites collected for the Election 2002 Web Archive. Sites in the archive are available on the Web at the Library of Congress Minerva Project, in collaboration with WebArchivist.org and the Internet Archive, with additional funding from the Pew Charitable Trusts through the Center for Communication and Civic Engagement at the University of Washington.

This project was conducted under the direction of Professors Kirsten Foot of the University of Washington, and Steve Schneider of the SUNY Institute of Technology.
